WEATHERFORD — Locked in a slugfest with North Richland Hills, the Brownwood Lions came up a run short in the finale at the Weatherford tournament, falling, 11-10, Saturday afternoon.
The loss was the fourth in a row to end the opening weekend of the season for the Lions (1-4), who defeated Azle in the opener and then fell to Abilene High, Weatherford, Ennis and Northland Richland Hills.
Leading 10-9 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning Saturday, the Lions surrendered a pair of runs to allow a walk-off victory for North Richland Hills.
The Lions took a 3-0 lead in the top of the third inning, which later stood at 5-1 heading to the bottom of the fifth. North Richland Hills seized a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the fifth, but Brownwood rebounded with its own five-spot to grab a 10-6 lead. North Richland Hills then closed the gap to 10-9 in the bottom of the sixth, moving within striking distance for the walk-off win.
Offensively for Brownwood, Rylan Reagan belted a grand slam, a two run-homer and a double, and collected seven RBIs to pace the Lions’ attack. Grant Fanara doubled twice and drove in two runs, Hayden Donahoo chipped in two hits and a pair of RBIs and Harley Price and Grayson Swanzy also singled.
On the mound, Caleb Hernandez pitched the first four innings and allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts and five walks. Justin Buchanan did not retire a batter and surrendered five runs — four earned — on two hits with
one walk. Swanzy worked 2.1 innings of relief and gave up four runs — one earned — on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Donahoo took the loss in the relief, yielding one run on two hits with one strikeout in one-third of an inning.
Defensively, the Lions committed seven errors in the field.
The Lions are off until Thursday when they take part in the Glen Rose tournament. Brownwood will face Carrollton Ranchview at 11 a.m. Thursday, Springtown at 1 p.m. Thursday and Glen Rose at 5 p.m. Friday.
