No. 16 Brownwood (15-2) faces Graham, Clyde in final two district tune ups
GRAHAM — The No. 16 Brownwood Lady Lions added three more victories to their season tally Friday to open the Graham softball tournament, posting two shutouts and a pair of one-run victories.
The Lady Lions slipped past Vernon, 5-4, in their tournament opener then blanked Eula, 8-0, and Abilene Cooper, 1-0.
In the victory over Cooper, Chyanne Ellett tossed a five-inning, two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts and only one walk.
Offensively, Brownwood generated six hits — two by Ayanna Clemons and one each by Annie Gillispie, Victoria Sanchez, Emily Perez and Alexis Larrea.
The Lady Lions scored their run in the top of the first inning as Sanchez’s one-out RBI infield single brought home Clemons, who started the game with a walk.
In the one-run triumph over Vernon, the Lady Lions broke a 4-all tie with the decisive run in the bottom of the fourth as a two-out RBI line drive double to left field by Clemons plated Kayla McFarden, who doubled to left to start the inning.
Brownwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but Vernon tallied two runs in both the second and third innings to grab a 4-3 advantage. The Lady Lions knotted the score in the bottom of the third when Perez’s two-out RBI single to right plated Ellett, who doubled to center field with one out.
The Lady Lions collected eight hits — two each by McFarden and Ellett and one apiece by Clemons, Sanchez, Perez and Ashlynn Patteson. McFarden also drove in two while Clemons, Sanchez and Perez added one RBI apiece.
In the circle, Perez worked the first four innings and yielded four runs — two earned — on six hits with a walk to tally the victory. Ellett pitched an inning of perfect relief with two strikeouts to notch the save.
The win over Eula saw Larrea hurl a one-hit shutout with five strikeouts for Brownwood.
Offensively, Ryleigh Dalleh drove in three runs without the benefit of a hit, while Clemons and Danyelle Gongora also collected an RBI. Clemons led Brownwood with two hits while Larrea, McFarden and Gongora added one each.
Brownwood scored once in the first inning, four times in the fourth and added three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Lions (15-2) conclude tournament action Saturday against host Graham at 11:30 a.m. and Clyde at 2:30 p.m. Brownwood then opens District 5-4A action at 2 p.m. Tuesday when Abilene Wylie visits.
