The Howard Payne Lady Jackets have yet to win an American Southwest Conference softball series this season as they dropped their fifth straight to the Sul Ross Lady Lobos. After splitting Friday’s doubleheader, the Lady Jackets were saddled with a 10-3 loss Saturday.
HPU slipped to 5-15 on the season with the defeat and 3-12 in ASC action, with a three-game road trip at top-ranked UT-Tyler, the defending NCAA Division III national champion, up next.
After winning Friday’s series opener, 4-3, in nine innings, the Lady Jackets were outscored 18-3 over the final two games.
In Saturday’s setback, Howard Payne surrendered the first five runs before striking for a pair in the bottom of the second inning. Sul Ross (8-14, 5-10) stretched the lead to 6-2 in the third inning and 9-2 in the top of the sixth before the Lady Jackets scored again in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Lobos added one more run in their final at-bat.
Howard Payne finished with six hits — a solo home run by Haley Slater, a double and a single from Kodi Glosson and singles from Rachel Hitt, Madison Sims and Sabrina Ochoa.
In the circle, Tonya Thompson went the distance for Howard Payne, allowing six earned runs on 14 hits with four walks. Defensively, the Lady Jackets committed four errors.
Sul Ross was sparked by Alejandra Pasillas with three hits and an RBI, Jav’ana Gonzales with two hits and two RBIs, Zuriah Levya and Destanie Hernandez with two hits and one RBI apiece, Gabriela Raimondi with a pair of hits, and Darrian Doederlin, Courtney Dillard and Isuara Rodriguez with singles.
Jackie Gonzalez notched the win the circle for Sul Ross, yielding two runs on three hits with one strikeout and two walks.
