Brownwood completes undefeated tournament with victories over host Graham, Clyde

GRAHAM — The defending Region I-4A champion and 16th-ranked Brownwood Lady Lions will carry a seven-game win streak into Tuesday’s District 5-4A softball opener after completing the Graham tournament with an unblemished record.

On the heels of Friday’s victories over Eula, Vernon and Abilene Cooper, the Lady Lions knocked off host Graham and Clyde by identical 4-0 counts Saturday, completing a 5-0 run through the event.

The Lady Lions defeated Graham for the second time this season, picking up a 12-1 victory in the first meeting in Brownwood on March 3.

In the rematch, Brownwood scored single runs in the bottom of the first and second innings and added two more in the fifth. The Lady Lions’ eight-hit attack included two from Kayla McFarden and one apiece by Ayanna Clemons, Danyelle Gongora, Chyanne Ellett, Ashlynn Patteson, JaKobee Holloway and Ryleigh Dalleh. Clemons, Ellett, Dalleh and Victoria Sanchez recorded RBIs.

In the circle, Emily Perez picked up the win, tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts and four hits allowed. Ellett worked an inning of perfect relief and collected a strikeout.

Brownwood’s first run scored on an RBI ground out as Sanchez drove in Gongora, who reached on a one-out single in the first. The Lady Lions’ run in the second inning was the result of Dalleh tripling home McFarden, who started the frame with a single.

The two-run fifth inning for Brownwood started with a leadoff double by Holloway, who later scored on an RBI single by Clemons. Later, Clemons came home when Ellett doubled to right field.

In the 4-0 victory over Clyde, Brownwood chalked up three runs in the bottom of the first inning and added another in the fourth.

Ellett went the distance in the circle, tossing a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and three walks.

At the plate, the Lady Lions tallied seven hits — a triple by McFarden, a double by Alexis Larrea and singles by Clemons, Ellett, Sanchez, Perez and Patteson.

Brownwood’s three-run first inning saw Clemons single, Annie Gillispie walk and Ellett single to load the sacks with no outs. Sanchez followed with an RBI sacrifice fly that plated Clemons with the first run. Perez then singled up the middle to bring home Gillispie, while Larrea chipped in an RBI double that drove home Ellett.

The final run for the Lady Lions in the fourth inning was the result of McFarden’s leadoff triple, followed by an RBI ground out from Gongora.

Brownwood (17-2) will host Abilene Wylie at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the District 5-4A softball opener for both squads. The Lady Lions rallied from eight runs down to defeat Abilene Wylie, 12-8, at the Brock tournament earlier this season. Brownwood also ended Wylie’s season in the third round of the playoffs last year.
