Lady Jackets drop first two games of series, 10-0, 17-0
TYLER — The defending national champion and second-ranked UT-Tyler Lady Patriots made quick work of the Howard Payne Lady Jackets in an American Southwest Conference softball doubleheader Friday night.
The Lady Jackets suffered their sixth ASC series loss in as many outings as they were swept in Games 1 and 2 of the series, 10-0 and 17-0, respectively.
With the losses, Howard Payne slipped to 5-17 overall and 3-14 in ASC action, while UT-Tyler improved to 21-2 overall and 12-2 in league action.
Game 3 of the series will take place at 11 a.m. today at Suddenlink Field.
In the 10-0, six-inning loss, the Lady Jackets yielded three runs in the first inning, one in the second, two in the fourth and four in the sixth.
UT-Tyler generated a dozen hits off HPU hurlers Tonya Thompson and Audrey Simpson, who also issued six walks and struck out one batter.
Hannah Moore finished with two hits, including a three-run homer, to pace the UT-Tyler offense.
The Lady Jackets collected three hits against Lady Patriot pitcher Alaina Kissinger, who fanned seven batters. Kodi Glosson singled in the top of the second inning, Kayla Boucher added a hit in the fourth and Sabrina Ochoa singled to start the sixth for HPU.
In the 17-0, five-inning loss, Howard Payne surrendered five runs in the first inning, eight in the second and four in the fourth. The Lady Patriots finished with 21 base hits off the HPU trifecta of Thompson, Simpson and Madison Witherwax.
Kursten Jaime homered and drove in two for UT-Tyler, Cheyenne Thompson doubled three times and plated three runners and Bianca Van Vlerah chipped in two hits and three RBIs.
Howard Payne mustered one hit off Whitney Romero, who struck out seven. Ochoa singled for the second straight game, with her hit coming in the third inning to account for the only Lady Jacket base runner.
