TYLER — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets concluded their American Southwest Conference softball series against defending national champion and second-ranked UT-Tyler with an 8-0, five-inning loss Saturday.

In the three-game sweep, the Lady Jackets (5-18, 3-15) were outscored 35-0 by the Lady Patriots (22-2, 13-2).

The Lady Jackets tallied three hits off UT-Tyler relief pitcher Miranda Leal in the finale, after Alaina Kissinger tossed four no-hit innings with a pair of strikeouts.

In the top of the fifth, HPU’s Kayla Boucher led off with a single up the middle, then Kodi Glosson reached on an infield single to third base. Tiffany Hinkleman’s infield single to shortstop followed as the Lady Jackets loaded the bases with no outs. But Kyra Chapa grounded into a fielder’s choice as Kailey Cargill, running for Boucher, was retired at the plate, then Tonya Thompson struck out and Sabrina Ochoa grounded out as the game, and series, shutout remained intact.

In the circle, Audrey Simpson went the distance for HPU and fell to 2-6 on the season, yielding eight runs on 10 hits with four walks.

Offensive standouts for UT-Tyler included Cheyenne Thompson with three hits, including a solo home run; Lexi Ackroyd with two hits, including a double, and three RBIs; and Andrea Gonzales with a pair of hits and two RBIs.

The Lady Jackets, who have dropped all six of their ASC series thus far, host Hardin-Simmons (9-13, 6-12) in a three-game set Friday and Saturday. The first two games will take place beginning at 1 p.m. Friday at Lady Jacket Field, with the finale at noon Saturday.
