Brownwood girls fifth as a team following opening round of 422

ABILENE — Brownwood Lady Lion Mallory Garcia fired a career-best round of 79 and sits in second place after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole District 5-4A girls golf tournament.

Garcia’s Wednesday round trailed only that of Abilene Wylie’s Maddi Olson, who shot a blistering 66 at Diamondback Golf Course. Garcia is ahead of Big Spring’s Abbey Bryan by one stroke (80), Snyder’s Courtney Velasquez (81) by two strokes and Sweetwater’s Christa Martin (82) by three shots.

The first- and second-place teams and top two individuals not on those teams will advance to the Region I-4A tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock on April 24-25

As a team, Brownwood is in fifth place with a 422 composite score. Along with Garcia, Britlynn Bitters carded a 111, Destiny Recasner and Maddi Murray both shot 116s and Aleska Ramirez finished with a 120.

Competing as medalists for Brownwood were Breyle Sauseda with a 120 and Tyra Cotton with a 134.

Wylie leads the team standings with a 352 followed by Sweetwater (363), Snyder (365), Big Spring (393) and the Lady Lions.

The second round of the 5-4A girls golf tournament will take place April 5 in Snyder with the final round slated for April 10 at the Brownwood Country Club.
