Brownwood wraps up first half of district with 4-0 record
SNYDER — In a rematch of last year’s Region I-4A championship series, the No. 8 Brownwood Lady Lions found themselves trailing the Snyder Lady Tigers by a run heading to the fifth inning. There, the Lady Lions responded with a six-run frame, then held off the Lady Tigers’ charge during their final at-bat for a 10-8 victory Friday afternoon.
With the win — their 11th in a row — the Lady Lions (21-2, 4-0) completed the first half of their District 5-4A schedule with an unblemished record, while Snyder (13-14, 0-4) remained winless in league action.
The decisive fifth inning began with the Lady Lions down 5-4, but Ashlynn Patteson reached on one of Snyder’s seven errors, Ayanna Clemons singled and then Victoria Sanchez singled home Patteson to knot the score at 5. Chyanne Ellett was then safe on a fielder’s choice to fill the sacks while Emily Perez singled to left to plate Clemons with the go-ahead run.
With one out and the bases loaded, Kayla McFarden drew a walk that scored Sanchez with the seventh run. Ryleigh Dalleh followed with an RBI ground out that brought home Annie Gillispie, running for Ellett, for an 8-5 lead. Danyelle Gongora then doubled to left field to plate Perez and McFarden for a 10-5 advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Snyder’s Alyssa Benitez led off with a single and scored on Hailey Morris’ RBI double. Jasmine Montoya — who homered twice and collected five RBIs — followed with her second long ball to close the gap 10-8. But Ellett retired the next two batters on a grounder and pop up that didn’t leave the infield to secure the victory.
Ellett struck out 16 batters but also gave up 10 hits and walked two batters en route to the victory.
The Lady Lions trailed 3-1 after one inning when Montoya hit her first blast, a three-run shot that followed two walks.
Brownwood rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the top of the second as Dalleh singled and scored on an error, then Gongora, who reached on a fielder’s choice, and Patteson, who walked, scored on multiple errors during the same play.
Snyder, however, reclaimed a 5-4 edge in the bottom of the second.
Brownwood finished with 10 hits — three by Sanchez, two each by Perez and Gongora and one apiece from Clemons, Ellett and Dalleh.
The Lady Lions begin the second half of district action at Abilene Wylie at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Brownwood won the first meeting at Lady Lion Field, 5-2, on March 14.
