Brownwood fifth as team heading into final round
SNYDER — Brownwood Lady Lion Mallory Garcia slipped from second place to fourth place in the second round of the District 5-4A girls golf tournament Wednesday, but is still in the hunt to qualify for the Region I-4A tournament.
The top two teams, and top two individuals not on those teams, will advance to Shadow Hills in Lubbock April 24-25 for regionals. The final round of the District 5-4A tournament takes place at 10 a.m. Monday at the Brownwood Country Club.
Following a first-round 79 at Diamondback Golf Course last week, Garcia followed with an 89 Wednesday, giving her a 168 score. Garcia trails tournament front-runner Maddi Olson of Abilene Wylie (66+70=136), Big Spring’s Abbey Bryan (80+81=161) and Snyder’s Courtney Velasquez (81+82=163).
As a team, the Lady Lions shaved six strokes off their opening round 422, firing a 416 team score Wednesday, but they still remain in fifth place with an 838 tally after two rounds. Wylie (352+371=723) leads followed by Sweetwater (363+369=732), Snyder (365+370=735) and Big Spring (393+420=813).
Heading into Monday’s final round, Brownwood’s Britlynn Bitters owns a 216 (111+105) composite score, Maddi Murray has posted a 221 (116+105), Destiny Recasner is at 233 (116+117), and Aleska Ramirez has carded a 238 (120+118).
Competing as medalists in the second round for the Lady Lions were Delainy Garza (123), Tyra Cotton (126) and Sarah Griffin (130).
