ABILENE — A trio of Brownwood High entrants into the District 5-4A tennis tournament will be playing today at Hardin-Simmons University for third place — and potential playbacks with the opportunity advance to the Region I-4A tournament.
Kendra Renfroe and Piper Barberie in girls doubles, Jeremy Roberson and Mckenzie Adkins in mixed doubles and Matthew Thompson in boys singles are all still alive.
On Wednesday, the No. 2-seeded girls singles team of Renfroe and Barberie received a first-round bye, then knocked off the Big Spring duo of Cantu-Salazar in straight sets. The No. 3 team of Schroeder-Andrews from Abilene Wylie then upended the Brownwood duo in straight sets.
Renfroe and Barberie will face Big Spring’s Medina-Salazar duo at 9 a.m. today and with a win, coupled with a Schroeder-Andrews victory over Wylie teammates Corn and Elias, the Lady Lion tandem will earn a playback match and a chance to secure second place.
The No. 2-seeded mixed doubles team of Roberson and Adkins opened with a straight-set victory over the Big Spring tandem of Hernandez-Urias, but dropped a two-set match to Wylie’s team of McCurley-McMillan, the No. 3 seed.
Roberson and Adkins will face Sweetwater’s Hartman-Marlett duo at 10:30 a.m. today, and if McCurley-McMillan defeat Wylie teammates’s Lin-Smyser, the Brownwood duo will earn a playback back for second place with a victory over the Sweetwater tandem.
In boys singles action, the No. 3 seed Thompson received a first-round bye before knocking off Big Spring’s Blade Franks. Thompson then fell to Wylie’s Carson Cole.
Thompson will challenge Snyder’s Trace Chapman for third place at 9 a.m. today. A win, along with a Cole victory over teammate Andrew Zhang, will allow Thompson to clash with Zhang for second place.
In other Brownwood action Wednesday, James Bautista won his first-round boys singles match over Sweetwater’s Isaiah Pena before being defeated by Chapman.
In girls singles, Jordan Stavely won her opening match over Sweetwater’s Victoria Pena before falling, while Samantha Ethridge fell to Wylie’s Shruti Patel after a first-round bye.
Maritza Pargas and Cameron Hall received a first-round bye in girls doubles but were ousted by Medina and Salazar in their first match.
Meanwhile, Cade Rector and Cameron Smith and Josh Dean and Gabe Hinojosa both dropped their first-round boys doubles matches.
Also, the mixed doubles team of Kayleigh George and Pablo Solis were downed in the opening round by Lin and Smyser.
