Ellett tosses perfect game with 13Ks; Gillispie, Sanchez belt two-run HRs
SWEETWATER — Chyanne Ellett tossed a perfect game with 13 strikeouts, and Annie Gillispie and Victoria Sanchez both hit two-run home runs as the No. 5 Brownwood Lady Lions bounced back from their first District 5-4A loss with a 10-0 victory at Sweetwater Friday.
Coming off an 8-7 loss to Abilene Wylie that snapped an 11-game win streak and created a tie atop the 5-4A standings with the Lady Bulldogs, Brownwood (22-3, 5-1) responded by scoring all 10 of its runs in the first three innings, while Sweetwater (13-9, 1-4) put just two balls in play.
“I told them they needed to come out and have a statement game, a good game all the way around, and I thought they did a fantastic job with that today,” said Lady Lions head coach Jessica Lynn. “We had been scooting along in district but we haven’t won any games real convincingly. We wanted to let the district know we’re still alive and coming back strong.”
Ellett needed just 66 pitches in five innings of work, with only a ground out to first baseman JaKobee Holloway to start the second inning and a ground out to Sanchez at shortstop with one out in the first accounting for the only action seen by the Brownwood defense.
“Chyanne has been struggling just a little bit finding her release points, but today she was obliviously feeling good and came out and had a statement game herself and built some confidence,” Lynn said.
At the plate, Sanchez was 3 for 4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored, while Gillispie and Alexis Larrea both finished with two hits and two RBIs. Ayanna Clemons amassed three hits and scored three runs, while Emily Perez chipped in two hits and Ellett added one and an RBI.
“We got our offensive ignited in that one inning against Wylie, but I told them to carry that part of that game over with them,” Lynn said. “They were patient, they timed their pitches and made solid contact.”
In the two-run first inning, Sanchez singled home Gillispie, who bunted her way aboard, and Larrea reached on RBI infield single that scored Gillispie.
Brownwood stretched the lead to 5-0 in the second as Ellett’s RBI ground out scored Ashlynn Patteson, who reached on an error; Sanchez doubled home Clemons, who singled; and Perez reached on an error that allowed Sanchez to score.
All the Lady Lions’ damage in the third inning came with two outs. Clemons prolonged the inning with a single ahead of Gillispie’s two-run homer to left field. Ellett then singled and Sanchez drilled a two-run shot to right field. Perez followed with a double and Larrea’s RBI single up the middle plated Perez with the final run.
Brownwood has its second district bye Monday and visits Big Spring at 5 p.m. Thursday.
