Event concludes Thursday at Abilene Wylie
ABILENE — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions combined to earn 14 area meet berths during Tuesday’s opening day of the District 5-4A track and field meet, hosted by Abilene Wylie High School.
Securing individual district championships for the Lady Lions were Kayla McFarden in the pole vault, Aleyia Cotton in the long jump, and Darby Crysler in the 3200 meters.
For the Lions, gold medals were claimed by A.J. McCarty in the triple jump and McLane Moore in the pole vault.
Finishing as runners-up for the Lions were Kirk Vickers in the triple jump, Nick Salazar in the high jump and Paul David Quillin in the pole vault.
Coming in second for the Lady Lions were Kenya Barnes in the discus and Trinity Buitron in the pole vault.
Bronze medals were earned by Lady Lions Jaycee Lenz in the long jump, Alexis Larrea in the discus and Izzy Lawrence in the 3200 meters.
Audrey Boren also qualified for the area meet with a fourth-place effort in the girls 3200 meters.
The 5-4A meet will conclude Thursday with field events — boys long jump and discus and girls triple jump and shot put — beginning at 10 a.m. Running finals start at noon with the 4x100 relay followed by the 800 meters, 100-meter hurdles/110-meter hurdles, 100 meters, 4x200 meter relay, 400 meters, 300-meter hurdles, 200 meters, 1600 meters and 1600-meter relay.
Team awards will be presented at 4 p.m. as the Lady Lions are seeking a third straight district championship, while the Lions attempt to improve on last year’s runner-up team finish.
