Lady Lions earn 17 berths, nine spots secured for Lions during area meet

GRAHAM — The Brownwood Lions and Lady Lions teamed up to earn 26 berths in the Region I-4A meet in Lubbock April 28-29 based on their performance at the 5-4A/6-4A area meet here Wednesday.

Sixty percent of Brownwood’s contingent of 43 entrants that advanced from district to area will move on to regionals.

The Lady Lions, coming off their third consecutive district championship, led the charge Wednesday by securing 17 berths.

Advancing to regionals as area champions are Alexis Larrea in the discus (106-10), Kayla McFarden in the pole vault (10-6), Kyra Young in the 800 meters (2:20.35), the 4x200 relay of Aleyia Cotton, Jaycee Lenz, Madison Chesser and Tristan Escamilla (1:44.01) and the 4x400 relay of Alyssa Couey, Cotton, Escamilla and Young (3:57.81).

Qualifying as area runners-up are Trinity Buitron in the pole vault (9-0), 300-meter hurdles (47.98) and 100-meter hurdles (15.81), Young in the 400 meters (59.18), Lenz in the long jump (16-4), Darby Crysler in the 3200 meters (12:34.34) and Izzy Lawrence in the 1600 meters (5:32.51).

Moving on as a third-place finisher is Audrey Boren in the 3200 meters (12.53.6), while earning their spots with fourth-place efforts were Alyssa Preston in the shot put (32-8.5), Caroline Cloy in the 100-meter hurdles (16.14), Alex Fowler in the 1600 meters (5:43.5) and the 4x100 relay of Cotton, Escamilla, Chesser and Lakyn Ratliff (50.12).

For the Lions, who secured nine spots in Lubbock, McLane Moore captured the area championship in the pole vault (13-6), while runners-up included A.J. McCarty in the long jump (22-0.25), Nick Salazar in the high jump (6-6) and Paul David Quillin in the pole vault (J13-6).

Placing third were McCarty in the triple jump (42-11.5), Kirk Vickers in the long jump (21-0.5) and Xavier Armenta in the 300-meter hurdles (40.71).

Punching their tickets to Lubbock in fourth place were Braden Jetton in the 200 meters (22.45) and the 4x400 relay of Vickers, Jason Sanchez, Zach Strong and Armenta (3:33.4).
