ABILENE - The District 6-3A champion Early Lady Horns began their postseason run with a 9-4 victory over 5-3A fourth seed Coahoma in the opener of a Region I-3A softball bi-district playoff series at Abilene Christian University Thursday.
Games 2 and 3, if needed, will follow at 5 p.m. Saturday at ACU.
Early (23-7) led 2-0 after three innings, 2-1 through four, 5-4 after five and 6-4 heading to the seventh, where the Lady Horns tacked on three more runs.
The Lady Horns finished with 13 hits - three each by Laiken Reagan and Parker Smith, two apiece by Sydnee Shea and Makayla Deleon and one each from Shauna Kay Connelly, Emma Loven and Vance-Cady Gordon. Reagan doubled twice and drove in four runs, Smith homered and contributed two RBIs, Gordon doubled in a run and Loven also chipped in a home run.
In the circle, Deleon went the distance and yielded four runs - three earned - on nine hits with five strikeouts and six walks.
Early took a 2-0 lead in the first as Deleon bunted home Smith, who singled, and Reagan doubled home Deleon.
The lead reached 5-1 in the top of the fourth as Reagan doubled home Smith and Shea, who both singled, while Connelly's single plated Reagan.
The Lady Horns' lead was 6-4 in the sixth after an RBI infield single by Reagan brought home Gabby Constancia, who reached on an error.
Early's final three runs in the seventh were the result of Loven's inside the park home run with one out, a walk by Gordon, and Smith's two-run inside the park homer with two outs.
Pitcher Madison Daniels took the loss for Coahoma (11-16), allowing five runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and two walks over five innings. Annie Chandler homered and drove in two runs, Caitlyn Corley doubled home a run, Lexi Montelongo tripled and scored and Illiana Sandoval contributed an RBI single.
