The Brownwood Lions hope the third time proves to be the charm as they venture to Snyder Saturday in their third attempt to qualify for their 18th consecutive appearance at the 7-on-7 Division II state tournament in College Station.

The Lions are 3-3 in qualifying tournament action this summer, coming off a pair of losses in their most recent outing at the Brock qualifier, with games played in Springtown. Brownwood dropped its opener 37-31 in five overtimes to Eastland and also suffered a 40-20 loss to Arygle on May 27.

In Brownwood's first qualifier on May 20, the Lions swept Little River-Academy (45-32), Cameron (43-38) and Moody (53-6) to win their pool in Copperas Cove, but fell against tournament host Gatesville (35-32) after a change in venue.

On Saturday, the Lions will compete at Tiger Stadium in Snyder in Pool C action against Lubbock Trinity Christian, Coahoma and Midland Greenwood. The winner of the pool will face either Winters, Anson, Kermit or Andrews out of Pool D for one of the three state berths up for grabs.

Brownwood's first game is slated to begin at 8:55 a.m., according to Lions offensive coordinator John Contrucci, with the state qualifying round set to start at 1:30 p.m.

The rest of the tournament features host Snyder, Levelland, Hawley and Blackwell in Pool A, which will match up with Pool B — which includes Sweetwater, Wink, Stamford and Wellman-Union — in the qualifying round. Levelland has already qualified for state and cannot advance past pool play.

The other qualifying game will feature the winner of Pool E — which consists of Lubbock Estacado, Plains, Slaton and Crane — against the survivor of Pool F — which features Roscoe, Merkel, Big Spring and state qualifier Graham.

The last three teams standing in Snyder will advance to the 7-on-7 Division II state tournament at Veterans Park and Athletic Complex in College Station June 29-30.
