Behind a combined 16-strikeout performance, the Brownwood Tigers chalked up a 6-1 victory over the Bangs Green Sox in Monday's TTAB District 5 10U Tournament opener at the Massey Sports Complex.
Tiger pitcher Quinten McCarty struck out nine, Kameron Caperton fanned five and Easton Judkins sat down a pair, as the Green Sox were held scoreless until their final trip to the plate in the top of the sixth inning.
Offensively, the Tigers struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning off Green Sox starting pitching Fredrick Richardson.
Caperton led off the bottom of the first with a walk, one of seven drawn by the Tigers in the contest. Caperton later scored from third base on an errant throw back to the pitcher. With two outs, McCarty also drew a walk ahead of an RBI single by Jorge Martinez Jr., who later scored on a wild pitch.
The Tigers stretched their advantage to 4-0 in the bottom of the third. A leadoff walk by Jose Rodriguez accounted for the lone base runner of the inning, as he eventually scored on a passed ball.
The final Tiger runs crossed the plate in the bottom of the fifth as Rodriquez and Deshawn Williams started the frame with consecutive walks. With one out, Martinez Jr. doubled home both base runners to finish with three RBIs in the contest.
The Green Sox scratched their lone run across the plate in the top of the sixth as Jamarkis Lowery drew a one-out walk. Lowery then stole second base, while an errant throw on the play allowed him to round the bases to prevent the shutout.
In the other TTAB District 5 10U Tournament game Monday night, the Bangs Pirates run-ruled the Coleman Moose, 19-9.
