The Brownwood Yankees and Brownwood Royals will meet for the TTAB District 5 10U Tournament Championship at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Massey Sports Complex.

The Yankees knocked off the Brownwood Pirates, 10-3, Wednesday in a battle of tournament unbeatens to lock up a championship game, while the Royals eliminated the Brownwood Tigers, 16-2. Later Wednesday night, the Royals ousted the Pirates, 13-3, to secure the second championship game spot.

In the Yankees’ victory over the Pirates, a five-run top of the sixth inning stretched a narrow two-run lead into a comfortable seven-run cushion heading into the final half-inning.

Leading 5-3 when the top of the sixth started, the Yankees tallied six consecutive hits after the first out of the inning was recorded. With the top of the order up, Martin Nava and Michael Badillo singled to right and left field respectively ahead of an RBI single down the third base line by Antonio Ybarra that plated Nava. Aiden Driskill followed with an RBI base hit up the middle that brought home Badillo. Nikolis Salazar delivered the biggest hit of the inning, a two-RBI single to right field that drove in Ybarra and Driskill. Following an infield single by Dario Hernandez and an intentional walk to Noah Gonzalez, Connor Loewrigkeit singled in Hernandez with the final run.

The Pirates grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the bottom of the first when Jermiah Chacon and Garrett Moody led off with consecutive singles, and Moody eventually scored from second base when Justin Valdez reached on a fielder’s choice.

In the top of the second, the Yankees took control with a five-run frame.

Hernandez led off the inning with a double, but was erased on a fielder’s choice that allowed Gonzalez to reach. Dylan Brown and Nava walked to load the bases with two outs, and the Yankees followed with three clutch hits. Badillo’s two-RBI double to right field gave the Yankees a 2-1 edge. Ybarra then drove in a run with a single up the middle, and Driskill capped the scoring in the second with a two-RBI single to center field.

The Pirates closed the gap to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth as Hunter Davidson tripled with out out and scored on an RBI single by Hayden Barnum.

In the fifth inning, the Pirates crept within 5-3 as Moody reached on an error and scored on an RBI infield single by Austin Pittman.
