Three matches into the season and the Brownwood High tennis team remains undefeated as the Lions and Lady Lions collected their second home victory in as many days, 15-4 over Class 6A Killeen Wednesday.

“The match today was a bit of a surprise,” said Brownwood High tennis head coach Mark Davis, whose team has also defeated San Angelo Lake View and Graham. “Killeen was overall the best of the three teams we've played, but our girls and boys handled them pretty well in doubles. So once again we were able to pull some of the starters and give some of the underclassmen a chance to play.”

The Lady Lions won eight of their nine matches overall, including sweeping three doubles contests.

Notching doubles wins were No. 1 Piper Barberie and Kendra Renfroe (6-0, 6-4 over Mancada-Ramirez), No. 2 Mckinzie Adkins and Cameron Hall (6-1, 6-4 over Kinere-Rodriguez) and No. 3 Jordan Stavley and Samantha Ethridge (6-2, 6-1 over Mack-Zaria).

In singles action for the girls, victories were claimed by No. 1 Renfroe (9-7 over Mancada), No. 2 Barberie (8-0 over Mack), No. 4 Maritza Pargas (8-3 over Ramirez), No. 5 Adkins (8-0 over Rodriguez) and No. 6 Stavley (8-2 over Kinere).

The Lions chipped in six wins to the team total, including two in doubles action — No. 1 Jeremy Roberson and Gabe Hinojosa (6-3, 6-4 over Duran-Ramas) and No. 3 James Bautista and Michael Gomez (6-0, 6-0 over Silve-Gill).

Picking up singles wins in boys action were No. 1 Roberson (8-2 over Duran), No. 2 Hinojosa (8-2 over Kellum), No. 5 Jimmy Kniss (8-3 over Hernandez) and No. 6 Jose Lira (8-0 over Silve).

Brownwood also tallied a victory in mixed doubles, which was earned by Pargas and Cade Rector (6-4, 6-2 over Hernandez-Hernandez).

“Freshman Jimmy Kniss scored his first varsity team point at No. 5 singles and some other freshmen also showed well in a couple of sub-varsity matches,” Davis said. “This group of freshmen is the best I've seen in a while.”

The Lions and Lady Lions (3-0) are back in action Friday with matches at Harker Heights at 8:30 a.m. and Killeen High at 1:30 p.m. On Saturday, Brownwood will face Pflugerville at 8:30 a.m. at Killeen High.
