The Brownwood High tennis team ran its season-opening win streak to five matches over the weekend before suffering its first loss.

On Friday, the Lions and Lady Lions defeated Killeen, 13-6, for the second time in three days, then followed with their first victory over Harker Heights, 10-5, in at least a decade.

Saturday action began with a narrow 10-9 triumph over Pflugerville before Brownwood was upended by Copperas Cove, 12-7.

In the win over Harker Heights, victories for the boys were earned by No. 1 Jeremy Roberson and Gabe Hinojosa (5-7, 6-3, 10-7 over Fuertes/Victorian), No. 2 James Bautista and Michael Gomez (7-5, 6-2 over Wasson/Holland) and No. 3 Cameron Smith and Pablo Solis (6-1, 7-6, 10-2 over Bailey/Bohac).

Girls doubles wins were notched by No. 2 Cameron Hall and Mckinzie Adkins (6-4, 4-6, 10-8 over Claar/Boykins) and No. 3 Jordan Stavley and Samantha Ethridge (6-0, 5-7, 10-4 over Fernandez/Haider).

The Lions added three more wins in singles competition by No. 1 Roberson (6-2, 6-3 over Fuertes), No. 4 Bautista (7-5, 0-6, 10-3 over Holland) and No. 5 Smith (6-0, 6-2 over Bailey).

The Lady Lions’ singles wins were collected by No. 5 Hall (3-6, 6-2, 10-3 over Fernandez) and No. 6 Stavley (6-2, 6-3 over Boykins).

In the rematch with Killeen High, Brownwood was sparked by a 6-0 performance from the Lady Lions in singles matches.

Tallying victories for the girls were No. 1 Piper Barberie (8-2 over Armania Gomez), No. 2 Kayleigh George (8-2 over Kaitlyn Mancada), No. 3 Adkins (8-0 over Michelle Hernandez), No. 4 Ethridge (8-3 over Kaitlyn Ramirez), No. 5 Stavley (8-0 over Rachel Cannon) and No. 6 Kaylee Renfroe (8-3 over Lele Kinere).

Both the Lions and Lady Lions finished with a pair of doubles wins. Victories for the girls belonged to No. 1 Kendra Renfroe and Barberie (6-2, 6-1 over Mancada and Ramirez) and No. 3 Stavley and Ethridge (6-1, 6-2 over Cannon and Zarial). The Lions’ doubles wins were earned by No. 1 Roberson and Hinojosa (6-2, 6-3 over William Duran and Ramos) and No. 3 Smith and Solis (6-2, 6-1 over Roberto Silva and Gill).

In singles action, No. 5 Gomez (5-7, 6-0, 10-7 over Chrys Hernandez) and No. 6 Alex Smith (2-6, 6-2, 10-4 over Silva) notched victories for the Lions.

The Brownwood duo of George and Cade Rector also won the mixed doubles match, 6-1, 3-6, 11-9 over Hernandez and Hernandez.

Against Pflugerville, the Lady Lions swept all six singles matches and won two of three doubles.

In singles competition victories were claimed by No. 1 Kendra Renfroe (6-3, 6-1 over Higgins), No. 2 Barberie (6-2, 6-4 over Hernandez), No. 3 Adkins (6-1, 6-2 over Pham), No. 4 Hall (6-3, 6-2 over Phan), No. 5 Stavley (6-1, 6-2 over Ho) and No. 6 Ethridge (6-3, 4-6, 10-5 over Henley).

Collecting doubles triumphs were No. 1 Barberie and Renfroe (6-0, 6-2 over Higgins and Henley) and No. 3 Stavley and Ethridge (6-3, 7-5 over Phan and Floyd).

The Lions picked up two wins — one in singles and one in doubles.

Roberson, in the No. 1 singles spot, tallied a 4-6, 7-5, 10-3 victory over Tehrani. The doubles victory belonged to No. 3 Smith and Solis (7-5, 7-5 over Cano/Pham).

In the 12-7 loss to Copperas Cove, Brownwood four wins in girls singles action — by No. 1 Renfroe (8-4 over Mackwelung), No. 2 Barberie (8-2 over Gonzalez), No. 4 Adkins (8-1 over Reid) and No. 6 Stavley (8-3 over Purdum).

No. 2 Adkins and Hall (6-2, 6-2 over Diaz and Samarripa) in girls doubles, the mixed doubles team of George and Rector (7-5, 4-6, 10-6 over Hernadez and Purdum), and Hinojosa in No. 2 boys singles (8-5 over Nix) also chipped in victories.

Brownwood (5-1) will be back in action at 4 p.m. Tuesday when it hosts Gatesville.
