Brownwood goes 1-2 in pool play, falling to Azle and North Richland Hills

GRANBURY — Playing against Class 5A and 6A competition, the Brownwood Lady Lions posted a 1-2 record in pool play Thursday at the Granbury volleyball tournament, picking up their victory against the host Lady Pirates.

“We played in a very tough pool today and we're the only 4A team,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Julie Kennedy, whose team owns a 5-6 overall record. “Granbury is a solid 5A team and to go out and beat them in their house was a great end to the day. We played lights out and I couldn't be more proud.”

In the Lady Lions' 28-26, 25-17 triumph over Granbury, Torrey Miller led the attack with 15 kills trailed by three each from Ashlyn Patteson and Mikaela Smith, two from Cheyenne Stroope and one apiece from Aleyia Cotton and Tyra Cotton.

Hadley Monroe dished out 11 assists followed by eight from Davalynn Monroe and one from Miller.

Smith and Aleyia Cotton served a team-high three aces while Miller and Patteson chipped in one apiece.

Defensively, Aleyia Cotton posted four digs followed by two each from Smith and Annie Gillispie and one from Madi Gosch.

Smith and Miller recorded Brownwood's blocks.

In the tournament opener, the Lady Lions fell to Azle by a 25-16, 25-21 count.

Miller notched five kills followed by Aleyia Cotton with three, Smith and Tyra Cotton with two each and Stroope and Patteson with one apiece.

Both Davalynn Monroe and Hadley Monroe recorded five assists, while Miller served two aces and Smith and Aleyia Cotton contributed one ace apiece.

On the defensive end, Gillispie and Patteson tallied two digs each while Miller, Hadley Monroe and Davalynn Monroe added one each.

Brownwood also came up short in a 25-21, 25-19 setback against North Richland Hills.

Miller again led the way with seven kills trailed by three from Smith and one apiece from Stroope, Patteson and Tyra Cotton.

Davalynn Monroe distributed five assists and Hadley Monroe added a pair, while Patteson and Miller notched Brownwood's aces.

Gillispie's four digs were the high water mark followed by two each from Gosch, Miller and Davalynn Monroe, and one apiece from Smith, Patteson and Hadley Monroe.

Smith recorded four blocks, Stroope and Tyra Cotton contributed three each, Miller finished with two and Aleyia Cotton added one.

The Lady Lions continue tournament action Friday. Brownwood's opponent was unknown at press time.
