SHERMAN — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets kicked off their 2017 volleyball season at the Austin College tournament over the weekend, where head coach Colleen Westfall’s squad won two of their four matches.

Both victories occurred Friday as the Lady Jackets knocked off Centenary and Paul Quinn. Howard Payne then dropped Saturday matches to Lawrence University and Austin College.

The Lady Jackets needed five sets to get past Centenary in Friday’s opener, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16, 21-25, 15-13.

ASC Preseason Player to Watch Zhartezia Bradley recorded 20 kills for the Lady Jackets followed by 13 from Jordan Rogers, nine from Macy Maniscalo, seven from Kailey Doering, four from Ariana Rehm, three apiece from Cheyenne Lovelady and McKenna Walker and one from Madeline Kelly.

Lovelady distributed 52 assists while Jordan Livingston added two and Jazmine Bridges, Rogers, Doering and Walker were credited with one apiece.

Lovelady’s five aces were also a team-high followed by two from Ashley Moore, and one each from Rogers and Bridges.

The defensive effort was highlighted by 29 kills from Livingston, followed by 18 from Moore, nine from Lovelady, eight from Bridges, four apiece from Rogers and Doering, two each from Maniscalo, Kelly and Jaci Frazier and one by Walker.

Rogers and Bradley both finished with five blocks, three apiece came from Lovelady and Doering, Kelly contributed a pair and Walker and Rehm each recorded one.

Howard Payne swept Paul Quinn, 25-6, 25-12, 25-6, in the last of its two Friday matches.

Sarah Bapeli led HPU with seven kills followed by Rogers with six, Chelsea James and Bradley with five apiece, Maniscalo with three, Kylie Metcalf with two and Moore, Lovelady, Walker and Rehm with one apiece.

Lovelady dished out 16 assists trailed by 12 from Walker and one each from Moore and Bridges.

Jaci Frazier recorded 10 service aces followed by three from Moore, two from Lovelady and one each from Walker and Rogers.

Defensively, Livingston tallied 13 digs trailed by nine from Moore, three each from Frazier and Bridges and one apiece by Lovelady, Rogers and Doering.

Rogers and James collected HPU’s two blocks at the net.

Stats from the Saturday losses were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Jackets (2-2) head to Atlanta, Georgia next weekend for the Emory Classic with matches against DeSales and Emory Friday and Covenant and Chapman Saturday.
