The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets needed double overtime, but walked away with a 2-1 victory over the University of Dallas in Saturday’s soccer season opener at Citizens National Bank Field.

With just 12 seconds remaining in the second overtime session, Roger Bonilla scored with an assist from Daniel Lemus to complete the Yellow Jackets’ comeback victory.

Dallas took a 1-0 lead just 9:31 into the contest as Tomas Depetris scored on a free kick.

The Yellow Jackets drew even at 1 with 29:48 left in regulation as Jonpaul Vargas found the back of the net with an assist from Dylan Person.

HPU attempted 10 shots with six on goal — two each by Vargas and Tracer Moore and one apiece by Michael Westerman and Bonilla.

Andrew Hackey recorded four saves and did not allow a goal in 64:59. Nicholas Panameno worked 45:01 in net with one save and one goal allowed.

Dallas fired 16 shots with six on target.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action at 4:30 p.m. Thursday when Jarvis Christian visits.
