MARYVILLE, Tennessee — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets played Maryville College to a 1-all tie in Friday’s season opener.

At the 54:25 mark, just over nine minutes into the second half, Howard Payne took the lead when Lesley Garcia scored on a free kick just outside the box on the left hand side. Rachel Crane was credited with an assist.

With 19:15 left in the contest, Maryville drew even as Shannon Reagan scored.

Neither team mustered a goal in the overtime sessions, where Howard Payne was outshot 3-1.

The Lady Jackets attempted nine shots overall with six on goal — two by Kaitlyn Harrison and one apiece by Dayane Gutierrez, Victoria Sanchez, Jada Austin and Garcia.

Alexandra Thompson recorded four saves in 65 minutes for HPU, while Nicole Goodwin added three saves in 45 minutes. Maryville attempted 21 shots with eight on target.

Howard Payne returned to action Saturday in Maryville, where the Lady Jackets were dealt a 1-0 loss. Game stats were unavailable at press time.

The Lady Jackets (0-1-1) host Jarvis Christian at 2 p.m. Thursday in their home opener.
