The Brownwood Lady Lions stretched their win streak to three matches Tuesday night at Warren Gym, experiencing ups and downs en route to a 25-15, 25-20, 26-24 victory over the Wall Lady Hawks.
“We played well,” said Lady Lions second-year head coach Julie Kennedy. “We served really well and only missed two serves the whole game and that was a really good point for us.
“Wall was tipping a lot and we were able to pick most of those up, so for the most part we were able to catch on to that.”
The Lady Lions (9-13) were coming off a pair of five-set victories over Class 6A Abilene High and Class 4A No. 4 Graham.
“We’ve been fighting back really well lately and last week we had two great wins,” Kennedy said. “We got behind, but we fought back and that was amazing to see.”
Against Wall, the Lady Lions were in control most of the night, but a hiccup in the third set almost extended the match. Brownwood raced out to a 14-2 lead, only to witness Wall rally and take a 24-23 advantage. But the Lady Lions regrouped and tallied the final three points to secure the sweep.
“We got a little too relaxed and fell apart,” Kennedy said of the third set. “I explained to the girls after the match it doesn’t matter whose on the other side of the net, we have to stay in our rhythm, stay in sync and play our game no matter what the situation is. It’s not early anymore, but we’re not in the meat of the season yet, so we still have a little bit to work on.”
Torrey Miller recorded nine kills to pace the Brownwood offense followed by Aleyia Cotton with six, Cheyenne Stroope with five, Ashlynn Patteson and Mikaela Smith with four apiece and Tyra Cotton with a pair.
Davalynn Monroe distributed 16 assists with 12 coming from Hadley Monroe, while McKenzie Welker was credited with one.
Patteson and Davalynn Monroe chalked up three aces apiece while Aleyia Cotton served two and Miller and Smith added one each.
On the defensive end, Miller’s 16 digs led the way trailed by 10 from Patteson, eight each from Davaylnn Monroe and Annie Gillispie, seven from Smith, five from Aleyia Cotton, two from Tyra Cotton and one each from Hadley Monroe and Lakyn Ratliff.
At the net, Stroope posted two blocks and Miller added one.
In the opening set, a string of six consecutive points allowed Brownwood to open a quick 10-3 lead. Despite a Wall timeout, the Lady Hawks never threatened the Lady Lions the remainder of the set.
Three kills from Miller and one each by Stroope and Aleyia Cotton highlighted the Lady Lions’ opening surge.
In the second set, consecutive kills by Miller pushed Brownwood back in front, 17-16, as the Lady Lions never trailed again. Brownwood had trailed by as many as three points, 10-7, earlier but gradually whittled away at Wall’s advantage. A couple of aces from Davalynn Monroe and two kills from Miller down the stretch iced the set.
In the finale, Brownwood could do no wrong initially, aided by a handful of Wall unforced errors. Down a dozen points, the Lady Hawks tallied 16 of the next 20 to draw even at 18. A block by Stroope put Brownwood back in front, 19-18, but Wall refused to go away.
A service error and an ace by Miller appeared to put Brownwood on the brink of victory at 21-19, but Wall responded with five of the next seven points to grab its only lead.
Brownwood pulled even at 24 on an errant spike attempt by Wall, then a kill from Stroope gave the Lady Lions a 25-24 edge. On the next serve, Wall was whistled for a double touch while attempting to set the ball at the net, and the final point was awarded to the Lady Lions.
