Playing against a Jarvis Christian squad with the bare minimum 11 players, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets exhausted the visiting NAIA Lady Bulldogs for an 8-0 victory in Thursday’s home opener at Citizens National Bank Field.

The eight goals matched the most in a single game in Lady Jackets’ history.

Howard Payne (1-1-1) led 2-0 at halftime, then tacked on six additional goals over the final 45 minutes.

Kaitlyn Harrison and Rachel Crane scored twice for the Lady Jackets, who were coming off a tie against Maryville and a loss to Piedmont in Maryville, Tennessee over the weekend. Jada Austin, Dayane Gutierrez, Victoria Sanchez and Madison Bridges also added goals for Howard Payne.

The Lady Jackets attempted 39 shots with 20 on goal, while Jarvis Christian failed to get off a shot the entire contest. Alexandra Thompson and Shelby Tanksley spent 45 minutes apiece in goal for the Lady Jackets.

Crane opened the scoring 20:23 into the game, putting the ball in the net following a rebound off an errant header by Sanchez. Austin tacked on HPU’s second goal with 6:30 left before intermission.

The flood gates opened in the second half as Harrison scored 5:24 after the break to make the score 3-0. Crane followed with her second goal 12:04 into the half, then Harrison scored again 8:23 later.

Gutierrez scored just 18 seconds after Harrison’s final goal, followed by Sanchez finding the net with 5:40 left and Bridges capping the scoring with 2:49 to go.

Jarvis Christian goalkeeper Marcelo Polanco made eight saves in 20 attempts.

The Lady Jackets are back in action at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14 at Ozarks where they begin American Southwest Conference action.
