CLARKSVILLE, Arkansas — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets remained undefeated on the season, opening American Southwest Conference men’s soccer action with a 1-0 road victory over the Ozarks Eagles Thursday afternoon.
After notching non-conference victories over the University of Dallas and Texas Wesleyan in dramatic fashion in the waning moments, the Yellow Jackets (3-0, 1-0) tallied the lone goal 13:44 into the contest as the defense pitched a shutout.
Daniel Lemus, who scored the game-winner against Texas Wesleyan with 65 seconds remaining in HPU’s most recent outing, found the net less than a third of the way through the first half thanks to an assist by Alejandro Molina.
Andrew Hackney recorded the shutout in goal for HPU, tallying five saves as Ozarks (3-2, 0-1) took nine shots overall.
The Yellow Jackets finished with seven shots and only four on goal — two by Lemus and one each by Tracer Moore and Michael Westerman.
Howard Payne will visit UT-Tyler at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
