SWEETWATER – The Brownwood Lady Lions halted a three-game slide and evened their District 5-4A volleyball record in the process Tuesday night, knocking off the Sweetwater Lady Stangs in straight sets, 25-13, 25-19, 25-16.

Brownwood (11-16, 1-1) was coming off a four-set loss at Big Spring Friday while Sweetwater (1-1 in district) opened league play with a victory over Snyder.

Also on Tuesday, Abilene Wylie (2-0) swept Big Spring (1-1) to move into sole possession of first place, trailed by a three-way for second place and Snyder (0-1), which had a bye, bringing up the rear.

Mikaela Smith notched a team-best 11 kills to lead the charge for the Lady Lions Tuesday night, trailed by eight each from Cheyenne Stroope and Torrey Miller, five from Aleyia Cotton and one from Ashlynn Patteson.

Hadley Monroe distributed 18 assists trailed by Davalynn Monroe with nine, Patteson with two and Smith with one.

Miller’s four aces were a team-high followed by three each from Smith and Patteson and one by Cotton.

Defensively, Miller recorded 11 digs trailed by Patteson with seven, Cotton, Annie Gillispie and Davalynn Monroe with six apiece, Hadley Monroe with four, Stroope and Smith with three each and McKenzie Welker and Caitlyn Moody with one apiece.

Smith and Miller both finished with four blocks while Stroope and Patteson added two apiece.

The Lady Lions’ first district bye falls Friday, then they open their 5-4A home slate at 6 p.m. Tuesday against Snyder.
