Lady Jackets move into tie for third place in ASC West with win

ALPINE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets completed a season sweep of American Southwest Conference rival Sul Ross Tuesday night, and moved above the .500 mark in the conference volleyball standings in the process.

After defeating Sul Ross in four sets at the Brownwood Coliseum on Sept. 12, the Lady Jackets needed five sets before emerging with a 25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 23-25, 15-9 road victory that kept the Lady Lobos winless in ASC action.

Howard Payne improved to 5-4 in ASC action and 7-11 overall, while Sul Ross (2-17, 0-9) experienced its 11th straight defeat. The Lady Jackets also moved into a third-place tie in the West Division with Hardin-Simmons (8-11, 5-3) with seven conference matches remaining. The top three seeds from each division advance to the ASC championship tournament Nov. 2-4 at the site of the East champion. HPU is attempting to earn its second trip in a row.

In Tuesday's win at Sul Ross, Macy Maniscalo led the charge with 13 kills trailed by Jordan Rogers and Zhartezia Bradley with 12 apiece, Kailey Doering with eight, Cheyanne Lovelady with four, Jazmine Bridges and Madeleine Kelly with three apiece and Ashley Moore and Jordan Livingston with one each.

Lovelady distributed 51 assists followed by two from Livingston and one each by Bradley and Moore.

Moore, Bradley and Lovelady each served one ace.

Defensively, Livingston — the reigning the ASC Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week — recorded 44 digs followed by Moore with 15, Lovelady with 14, McKenna Walker with 13, Bridges with 10, Doering with seven, Bradley with six, Maniscalo with three, Kelly with two and Rogers and Chelsea James with one apiece.

At the net, Bradley tallied nine blocks followed by Rogers with five, Doering and Maniscalo with four apiece, Kelly with two and Lovelady and Walker with one each.

For Sul Ross, Autumn Kirkpatrick notched 14 kills and five blocks, Alesi Hernandez finished with 19 assists, Mirella Thomas served two aces, and McKenna Thomas recorded 30 digs.

The Lady Jackets visit second-place Concordia (8-7, 5-2) at 6 p.m. Friday and ASC West front-runner Mary Hardin-Baylor (15-1, 7-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.
