BLANKET — Despite a 4-1 record, the Blanket Tigers find themselves as a sizable home underdog Friday night as the Strawn Greyhounds — ranked No. 3 in Class A Division II by sixmanfootball.com — come calling.
Blanket is coming off a 54-0 thrashing of Brookesmith last week, which followed its only loss of the season to Class A Division I No. 7 May, 54-8. Strawn (4-0), meanwhile downed Gholson, 73-38, last week and also owns victories over Fort Worth THESA (48-0), Petersburg (48-0) and Abbott (66-20).
In the Greyhounds’ win over Gholson last week, Strawn finished with 429 yards of total offense, including 306 rushing. Tanner Hodgkins led the way with 155 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while Carlos Villanueva rushed for a 54-yard touchdown, J.W. Montgomery added a 44-yard scoring sprint and Julian Fraga tacked on a 29-yard scoring scamper. Through the air, Villanueva hurled a pair of 29-yard touchdown passes to Zavion Winegart while J.R. Cervantes caught a 34-yard touchdown from Ivan Ruiz.
Blanket enters the contest averaging 41 points and 218 yards — 166 rushing and 52 passing — per game while allowing 15 points.
The Tigers’ ground game is anchored by Logan Wheeler (396 yards, 7 TDs) and Luke Kinkade (116 yards, 4 TDs), while Trenten Varner has completed 11 of 22 passes for 246 yards and seven scores. Primary receiving threats for Blanket include Wheeler (3-62, 3 TDs), Kinkade (3-62, 2 TDs), Tyler Simpson (3-61) and Kameron Spivey (2-60, 2 TDs).
Defensively for Blanket, standouts include Kinkade (52 tackles, 15 for loss, two fumble recoveries), John John Alexander (41 tackles, two for loss, one fumble recovery), Spivey (38 tackles, 10 for loss, two fumble recoveries), Varner (35 tackles, five for loss, one interception), Simpson (29 tackles, three for loss, one interception, one fumble recovery) and Wheeler (26 tackles, three for loss, one interception, one fumble recovery).
Last season, Blanket suffered a 46-22 loss to Strawn.
