BROOKESMITH — In their final outing prior to the start of District 12-A Division II action, the Brookesmith Mustangs target their second victory of the season as the Paint Rock Indians come to town.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Brookesmith (1-4) is coming off a 54-0 loss at Blanket this past Thursday, as all four of the Mustangs’ defeats have been shutouts. Paint Rock (2-3), meanwhile, recorded its second win of the season last week, 48-24 over winless Rochelle. The Indians’ other victory is a 51-6 decision over Gustine, who Brookesmith faces in the district opener next week.
In last week’s loss to Blanket, the Mustangs were limited to 48 yards of total offense. Johnathan Willoughby rushed for 13 yards and Mason Brummett added 8 before leaving the game with a leg injury. Brummett also passed for 29 yards and Holden Bolt added 3, while Ryder Nelson caught four passes totaling 41 yards.
Brookesmith has gained no more than 79 yards in any of their four defeats.
In the Mustangs’ lone win, a 54-8 triumph at Trent on Sept. 22, Brookesmith generated 262 yards, including 231 rushing, and allowed only 45 yards with two turnovers forced.
Brummett finished with 131 rushing yards and four touchdowns trailed by Willoughby with 36 yards and a touchdown and Randall Williams with 32 yards and a score. Holden Bolt also hurled a 31-yard touchdown pass to Nelson.
Paint Rock comes into the game ranked 69th out of 69 Class A Division I teams by sixmanfootball.com, while Brookesmith is 57th out of 67 Class A Division II squads.
Last season, Brookesmith knocked off Paint Rock, 69-50.
