Hardin-Simmons scored 5:32 into the contest, and that was all the offense the Cowboys needed as they dished out a 1-0 loss to the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets in American Southwest Conference men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at Citizens National Bank Field.

Luis Castro found the back of the net for the Cowboys (5-3-2, 4-2-2) with an assist by Matthew Clark.

Howard Payne (5-7, 3-6) outshot Hardin-Simmons 14-7, including 5-3 on goal, but was unable to light up the scoreboard.

Reid Longabaugh fired three shots on frame for HPU while Alejandro Molina and Joshua Rodriguez added one each.

In goal, Andrew Hackney tallied two saves.

The Yellow Jackets, who have lost six of their last seven matches, will look to regroup as they host East Texas Baptist at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

The Howard Payne Lady Jackets were unable to keep pace with perennial national power Hardin-Simmons as the Cowgirls cruise to a 5-0 victory in American Southwest Conference women’s soccer action Saturday at Citizens National Bank Field.

Hardin-Simmons (13-0, 9-0) took the lead just 5:16 into the contest as Taylor Bernal scored with a dual assist from Josey Meyer and Kirsten Parrish. Just 41 seconds later, Parrish scored an unassisted goal. The Cowgirls tacked on a third first-half goal with 3:50 left before intermission as Lexie Kramber found the net with an assist from Tori Waters.

An own goal gave Hardin-Simmons a 4-0 cushion with 23:35 left, then Elly Green capped the scoring with an assist from Rachel Bean with just 23 seconds left. .

The Cowgirls attempted 28 shots with 15 on goal as HPU keeper Nicole Goodwin recorded 10 saves in 90 minutes of action.

Howard Payne (5-6-1, 4-5), conversely, fired off just one shot — on target — by Rachel Crane.

The Lady Jackets will attempt to get back in the win column at 4 p.m. Thursday when they venture to Sul Ross.
