The Brownwood Lady Lions collected their second consecutive victory to even their District 5-4A volleyball record with a four-set triumph over Sweetwater during Friday's “Dig Pink” game. The Lady Lions tallied a 25-22, 24-26, 25-19, 25-23 victory over Sweetwater, completing a two-match district sweep of the Lady Stangs.
In just two matches, Brownwood (13-18, 3-3) has gone from the odd team out in the playoff picture at the midway point of the 5-4A schedule to alone in second place. The Lady Lions trail only Abilene Wylie (5-0 in district) and have moved ahead of Snyder (2-3), Big Spring (2-4) and Sweetwater (2-4).
Offensively, the Lady Lions were paced by 20 kills from Torrey Miller in their win over Sweetwater, while Mikaela Smith contributed a dozen, Cheyenne Stroope added eight, Ashlynn Patteson reeled off four and McKenzie Welker and Davalynn Monroe finished with two apiece.
Hadley Monroe dished out 18 assists, Davalynn Monroe distributed 17 and Smith, Patteson, Welker and Tyra Cotton were each credited with one.
Davalynn Monroe recorded a team-best six service aces while Miller and Smith added three apiece.
On the defensive end, Miller tallied 23 digs followed by Davalynn Monroe with 18, Patteson with 13, Stroope, Annie Gillispie, Caitlyn Moody and Lakyn Ratliff with six apiece, Hadley Monroe with four, Cotton and Welker with two apiece and Smith with one.
At the net, Stroope notched a pair of blocks while Smith tacked on one.
The Lady Lions have their second district bye Tuesday then host Snyder at 5 p.m. Friday. Brownwood will then conclude the regular season at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24 when Abilene Wylie invades Warren Gym.
