ABILENE — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets tipped off the 2017-18 basketball season with a 112-62 loss at NCAA Division I Abilene Christian Thursday night.

Jaren Lewis scored 15 points, leading eight players in to double-figure scoring as Abilene Christian started fast and held a 62-30 halftime lead.

Abilene Christian (2-1) had a very good night shooting, knocking down 42 of 67 shots from the field (62.7 percent), including 9 of 19 from behind the three-point stripe. The Wildcats shot 19 of 24 (79 percent) from the free-throw line.

Jalone Friday and Isaiah Tripp each contributed 14 points, and Jaylen Franklin, Hayden Farquhar, B.J. Maxwell and Tevin Foster each added 12.

Khyce Randall paced the Yellow Jackets with 22 points trailed by De’Marcus Hurd with 18, Talen Davis with six, Shadd Cole and Colton Otts with five each, Timothy Aguero with four and Darren Farmer with two points.

HPU (0-1) visits Division I Stephen F. Austin Saturday.
