NACOGDOCHES — Facing their second NCAA Division I opponent in as many outings this season, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets remained winless following a 118-64 exhibition loss to Stephen F. Austin Saturday.

HPU trailed 63-35 at halftime as Stephen F. Austin shot 59 percent (42 of 71) from the floor, 47 percent (9 of 19) from the three-point arc and 73 percent (25 of 34) at the free throw line. The Lumberjacks also owned a 40-22 edge in rebounds and forced 38 turnovers.

The Yellow Jackets, meanwhile, hit 43 percent (19 of 44) of their field goals, including 38 percent (8 of 21) of their treys. HPU was also 67 percent (18 of 24) from the free throw line.

De’Marcus Hurd scored a team-high 23 points for Howard Payne trailed by 11 from Khyce Randall, eight from Shadd Cole, seven from Timothy Aguero, four each from Drake Cooper and Javaris Jones, three from Talen Davis and two points apiece from Joshua Carroll and Jaze Randolph.

SFA’s Shannon Bogues led all scorers with 30 points followed by 25 from T.J. Holyfield, 14 from Kevon Harris, 13 from John Comeaux and 12 points from Ivan Canete.

The Yellow Jackets will visit Trinity at 7 p.m. Tuesday in their next contest.

 

UT-Tyler 83, Lady Jackets 54

 

TYLER — Sluggish first and fourth quarters plagued the Howard Payne Lady Jackets in Friday’s season-opening 83-54 loss at UT-Tyler.

Facing an American Southwest Conference rival in non-conference action, Howard Payne trailed 19-10 after one quarter, 43-33 at halftime and 65-48 through three periods.

Howard Payne converted just 28 percent (18 of 65) of its field goals, including 19 percent (4 of 21) of its three-pointers. The Lady Jackets also sank only 58 percent (14 of 24) of their free throws and committed 18 turnovers.

UT-Tyler drained 42 percent (28 of 66) of its shots, including 45 percent (9 of 20) of its treys, along with owning a 53-31 edge in rebounds.

Valarie Matlock led HPU with 21 points trailed by Chelsey Harris with nine, Jada Evans with eight, Caprica Brooks with six, Anastasia Wills with five, Presley McKeathan and Djimonii Jackson with two apiece and Dominique Featherston with one point.

Six UT-Tyler players finished in double figures — Demi Cumby with 15 points, Brittany Johnson with 14, Samantha Odom with 13, Alex Kochner and Carissa Spiker with 12 apiece and Alexus Bertrand with 10.

 

Stephen F. Austin 105, Lady Jackets 35

 

NACOGDOCHES — Playing their second game in as many days, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets were pummeled in exhibition action by NCAA Division I Stephen F. Austin, 105-35, Saturday.

Howard Payne trailed 33-6 after one quarter, 56-17 at halftime and 81-28 through three periods.

The Lady Jackets sank just 29 percent (15 of 52) of their shots, only 10 percent (2 of 19) of their three-point attempts and a mere 37 percent (3 of 8) of their free throws. HPU also coughed up 26 turnovers and was outrebounded 46-28.

Harris led HPU with 12 points followed by Evans with six, Chelsi Woodard with four, Featherson, Jackson and McKethan with three apiece, and Brooks and Jordan Sweat with two points each.

Stephen F. Austin knocked down 56 percent (38 of 68) of its field goals, including 50 percent (10 of 20) of its treys. Stevi Parker and Marissa Banfield led SFA in scoring with 14 points each trailed by Alyssa Mayfield with 13 and Lovisa Brunnberg with 11.

The Lady Jackets are back in action at 6 p.m. Monday at Texas Lutheran.
