Four members of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets football team — freshman running back Hunter Batten, senior guard Cyle Johnson, freshman safety Tevin Dawson and senior utility player Caisson Montieth — received postseason accolades from the American Southwest Conference.
Batten was selected first-team all-ASC after rushing for 961 yards, third most in the conference, and eight touchdowns, with three games of more than 100 yards. Batten recorded a season-high 211 yards against Sul Ross.
Johnson, a second-team pick, led an offensive line that paved the way for the third-best rushing offense in the ASC. Howard Payne averaged 4.1 yards per carry, 184 rush yards per contest, 294 total yards per outing and 19 points per game.
Dawson, who received honorable mention in the secondary, ranked second on the team in total tackles with 62. He also added two interceptions and six pass breakups to his numbers.
Montieth was named the Outstanding Sportsman of the Year. The Comanche graduate began the season at quarterback, moved to safety, and also spent time at punter en route to becoming a four-year letter winner during his time at HPU.
The Yellow Jackets finished with a 1-9 overall record under first-year head coach Braxton Harris, including a 1-8 mark against ASC foes.
