After coaching the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets soccer team on an interim basis during the 2017 campaign, and guiding the program to its best record in six years, Eanna O'Gorman on Wednesday officially became the fourth head coach in program history.
"I am delighted to be the new men's soccer coach here at Howard Payne University," O'Gorman said. "I can't wait to get started with a great group of players that are already in the program and look forward to adding some fresh talent to the team."
O'Gorman credited the Yellow Jackets, many of whom were in attendance during a press conference at the Mabee Center's Buillion Suites, with him landing his first head coaching job. Howard Payne posted a 6-8 overall record with a 4-7 American Southwest Conference mark after the Yellow Jackets mustered three total wins the season prior.
"I wouldn't be here without these lads," O'Gorman said. "My senior year at Eastern New Mexico was very similar to what happened here, the head coach left and a graduate assistant stepped up. You don't realize how difficult it can be when things are suddenly turned upside down. But the boys have been absolutely fantastic and have done everything I've asked of them. Coming from a different background, I've introduced different methods that the lads haven't seen before, but they gave 110 percent effort from the first day of training."
O'Gorman, an Ireland native, served the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant coach with the Yellow Jackets soccer program. Before coming to Howard Payne, O'Gorman was all-conference and defensive of the year of the player at Dodge City Community College and later played at Eastern New Mexico University.
"Since Coach O'Gorman arrived here on campus three years ago he's shown nothing but class in his actions and how he carries himself each and every day," said HPU Director of Athletics Hunter Sims. "I'm extremely confident our soccer program will continue to accel on the path that it's on under his leadership. Coach O'Gorman has extremely high standards for his soccer team and high expecations for them not only in the classroom and on the field but also spiritually."
O'Gorman holds a Masters of Business Administration from Howard Payne University (2017), becoming the first international student to receive a Masters degree from Howard Payne University in its 128-year history. He also obtained a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education from Eastern New Mexico University (2015) and an Associate Degree in Physical Education from Dodge City Community College (2013).
O'Gorman's brother, Caolan, served as a graduate assistant for the Yellow Jackets in 2017 and will continue as a graduate assistant next year.
O'Gorman married his wife Kassidi in May 2017 and they now reside in Brownwood.
