Brownwood begins with victories over San Elizario, Robinson
LORENA — Through their first two games at the Vicki Mitchell-Lauren Timmons Memorial Tournament in Lorena, the No. 5 Brownwood Lady Lions are still undefeated.
The Lady Lions opened the tournament with their 10th consecutive victory, 65-30 over San Elizario, and followed with a 61-42 triumph over Robinson to improve to 11-0 heading into the month of December.
In the win over San Elizario, Brownwood led 13-10 after one quarter, 34-20 at halftime and 50-26 through three periods.
The Lady Lions shot 31 percent (20 of 65) from the field, including 35 percent (7 of 20) from three-point land, while also converting 78 percent (18 of 23) of their free throws. Brownwood also recorded 28 rebounds and 15 steals, while turning over the ball 11 times.
Sage Cupps led the attack with 24 points trailed by 15 from Taytum Sutton, 14 from Mallory Garcia, six from Ryleigh Dalleh, four from Mya Wallace and two points from Kenya Barnes.
In the victory over Robinson, the Lady Lions turned a 16-14 lead after one quarter into a 35-19 halftime edge, which was reduced to 42-33 through three periods. Brownwood owned a 19-9 scoring advantage in the final period, however.
Cupps poured in 28 points to again pace the Lady Lions followed by 16 from Garcia, four each from Sutton, Barnes, Dalleh and Hadley Monroe and one point from McKenzie Welker.
Brownwood shot 46 percent (22 of 48), including 40 percent (8 of 20) on three-pointers, while sinking 56 percent (9 of 16) percent of their free throws. The Lady Lions notched 25 rebounds and 13 steals, while committing 16 turnovers.
The Lady Lions face Palestine at 12:30 p.m. Friday.
