RICHARDSON — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets slipped to 1-4 on the season and 0-1 in American Southwest Conference action as the UT-Dallas Comets notched a 98-59 win in Thursday’s league opener.
Howard Payne trailed 55-26 at halftime and never recovered, as the Yellow Jackets shot 28 percent (8 of 28) in the first half and 33 percent (20 of 60) for the game. HPU also converted just 50 percent (11 of 22) of its free throws, was outrebounded 42-34 and committed 21 turnovers.
UT-Dallas (3-2, 1-0) knocked down 67 percent (37 of 62) of its field goal attempts in the first half and 60 percent (37 of 62) for the game — including 53 percent (9 of 17) of its treys. At the free throw line, the Comets sank just 60 percent (15 of 25) of their attempts.
ASC West Player of the Week Khyce Randall led all scorers with 30 points, while Timothy Aguero chipped in 10 points for the Yellow Jackets trailed by six each from De’Marcus Hurd and Shadd Cole, five by Colton Otts and two points by Thomas Bingham.
UT-Dallas received 13 points from Keldon Pruitt, 12 each from Hans Burwitz and Curtis Allen and 10 points from Caleb Banks.
The Yellow Jackets will play their home opener against Southwestern at 4 p.m. Saturday.
