EARLY – The Early Longhorns slipped to 4-8 on the season with their second narrow loss to the San Saba Armadillos in less than a week, 46-42, Tuesday night.
Early also dropped a 52-50 decision to San Saba at the Menard tournament this past weekend.
In Tuesday's rematch, the Longhorns led 12-10 after one quarter but the Armadillos grabbed a 25-21 halftime advantage. Early trimmed the deficit to 35-34 after three periods, but San Saba held off the Longhorns' charge.
Ty Schafer led the Longhorns with 15 points followed by eight from John Griffin, six each from Taylor Hurt and Rowdy Elkins, five from Devyn Burns and two points from Brent Grooms.
Griffin and Burns each recorded eight rebounds followed by Elkins with seven and Hurt with six.
Griffin also tallied four steals followed by Schafer and Timmy Smithson with three apiece.
Burns dished out three assists while Elkins and Griffin were credited with two apiece, and Schafer recorded Early's lone block.
“We are doing everything right defensively,” said Early head coach Justin Moore. “We are causing turnovers and getting the defensive rebounds but we are causing our own offensive woes by turning the ball over. We fight hard and play tough, no doubt about it. We just have to cut out the dumb mistakes.”
The Longhorns are back in action at 8 p.m. Friday at Merkel.
