Yellow Jackets head into Christmas break with 5-6 record
SEGUIN — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets notched their third victory in four outings Wednesday afternoon, shaking off a one-point Tuesday loss to host Texas Lutheran with a 72-67 triumph over Schreiner at the TLU Bulldog Classic.
The Yellow Jackets (5-6, 2-2) trailed 30-27 at halftime, but outscored former American Southwest Conference rival Schreiner (3-6) by a 48-37 count over the final 20 minutes.
Trailing 59-58 with 4:55 left after a bucket by Schreiner's Andrew Logan, the Yellow Jackets tallied 11 of the next 13 points to seize control.
With 4:18 left, Khyce Randall drained a go-ahead three-pointer, then Shadd Cole knocked down a trey to stretch the advantage to 64-59 with 3:51 remaining.
Following a Schreiner bucket, De'Marcus Hurd sank a jumper to stretch the lead back to five points, 66-61, with 2:51 on the clock. Hurd then drilled a three-pointer at the 1:54 juncture to extend the lead to a comfortable margin of 69-61.
Schreiner trimmed the deficit to 69-65 with 1:03 remaining, but Randall and Hurd combined for three free throws over the next 33 seconds, pushing the advantage to 72-65 with half a minute left.
The Yellow Jackets converted 55 percent (28 of 64) of their second-half shots and 44 percent (28 of 64) for the game. HPU also knocked down 7 of 26 three-pointers and 12 of 16 free throws, while forcing 19 turnovers that led to 19 points.
Timothy Aguero poured in 21 points for Howard Payne trailed by 20 from Randall, 14 from Hurd, six from Darren Farmer, four from Joshua Taylor, three apiece from Shadd Cole and Thomas Bingham and two each from Cole Bene' and Cody Hastings.
Schreiner connected on 45 percent (27 of 60) of its field goals, but just 24 percent (4 of 17) of its treys.
Keenan Gumbs led all scorers with 22 points while Josh Bashford, with 15, and Mathew Rindahl with 13, also finished in double figures.
The Yellow Jackets are off until Jan. 2 when they visit Southwestern in a rematch of HPU's 86-73 home win on Dec. 2. Howard Payne resumes ASC action on Jan. 4 when UT-Tyler visits.
