KILLEEN — The Brownwood Lions soccer team was dealt a third consecutive setback during Thursday’s Killeen tournament opener, as Copperas Cove chalked up a 2-1 victory.
Since opening the season with a 3-1 triumph over New Summerfield at the Georgetown tournament — which featured a hat trick by Jakob Dorsett — the Lions have since fallen to Lockhart (6-1), Salado (2-1) and Copperas Cove.
Zack Smith accounted for the Lions’ lone goal Thursday, scoring off an assist from Joe Gosch.
Defensively, Caleb Woodcock gave up a pair of goals but recorded five saves, including one on a penalty kick.
The Lions were playing their first game under new head coach Brent Hardwick, who is leading both the boys and girls soccer programs.
Last weekend, Hardwick accompanied the Lady Lions to the Kennedale tournament while assistant coach Scott Swanzy led the Lions in Georgetown.
Brownwood (1-3) is back in action at 8 a.m. Friday against Killeen Shoemaker, then concludes tournament play at noon Saturday against Harker Heights.
