Haylee Allgood, a four-year member of the Brownwood Lady Lions varsity soccer team, will continue her athletic career at Wayland Baptist University as she signed a national letter of intent during a Wednesday afternoon signing ceremony at Warren Gym.
Allgood selected Wayland Baptist, located in Plainview, over Mountain View College, a two-year community college located in Dallas.
“I decided to go with Wayland because it was four-year so I could go there all four years instead of having to transfer,” Allgood said. “(Plainview's) a good town, it's no bigger than Brownwood. It has what I need, it has the coaches that I need, I just felt at home.”
Allgood has spent time at forward in previous seasons, but is playing as a defender for the Lady Lions during her senior campaign. Brownwood is off to a 8-1 start with seven shutout victories under first-year head coach Brent Hardwick.
“We've started off really well this year, better than we've started in my four years,” said Allgood, a member of three consecutive Lady Lion teams that reached the third round of the playoffs. “I'm just so proud of the group we have and I'm thankful for Coach Hardwick and the things that he's done since he's been here. I feel like we're going to go really far this year.”
Hardwick, who attended the ceremony, added, “We're really excited for Haylee, who's worked a countless amount of years to get where she is today. Being able to sign, it's a great experience to be able to play at the next level. I'm excited to see what she can do the rest of this year and beyond.”
Several more memories will be made before the season reaches its conclusion, but Allgood's fondest as a Lady Lion have been spent off the field with her teammates.
“The bus rides there and home, the practices with these girls, they've basically become my sisters,” Allgood said.
Brownwood High athletic director Kyle Maxfield, who also attended the ceremony, said, “We're really proud for Haylee and her family. Wayland is a great university and this is a great opportunity. I know you've worked hard for this opportunity but there's a lot left of your senior season and we all know you still have great things ahead of you this season, but also in the future after graduation.”
Once Allgood arrives as Wayland, her plan in the classroom is to study law with a goal of becoming a family lawyer.
The Lady Lions play their first home game of the season at 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 9 when Graham visits Gordon Wood Stadium.
