The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets baseball team improved to 3-0 on the young season with a 13-2 triumph over the University of Dallas Thursday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.

A doubleheader was originally scheduled for Saturday, then moved to Thursday, then turned into a single game as the second contest was called due to darkness before reaching the fifth inning.

In HPU’s win, the Yellow Jackets scored in five of the six innings in which they batted.

Howard Payne opened a 1-0 lead after one inning, which grew to 4-0 after two, 5-0 after three, 9-1 after four and 13-2 through six.

The Yellow Jackets generated nine hits, drew nine walks and took advantage of four Dallas (3-4) errors.

Joshua Gerrig and Blake Null both singled and doubled, while Noah Payne tripled and singled to pace the Yellow Jacket offense. Jacob Rodriguez tripled as well while Blake Laney and David Groves chipped in singles.

Rodriguez also walked three times while Groves drew a pair of free passes and Laney, Jacob Salazar, Jay Holland and Hunter Bazan were issued a base on balls as well.

Null, Groves and JW Ledbetter each produced a pair of RBIs while Gerrig, Payne, Rodriguez, Noah Coronado and Benjamin Lewis chipped in one RBI apiece.

On the mound, Seth Owen tallied the win, allowing one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts and one walk over four innings. Jonathan George, Wesley Smith and Shawn Brody each tossed an inning of relief, surrendering a combined one run on two hits with three strikeouts.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action at 2 p.m. Thursday as they host Mary Hardin-Baylor in the opener of a three-game American Southwest Conference series.
