EASTLAND — The Brownwood Lady Lions softball team continued its blistering start to the season, posting shutout victories over Merkel and Eastland Friday at the Eastland tournament.
After a 10-2 triumph at Class 6A Keller Central Tuesday, the Lady Lions followed with wins of 14-0 over Merkel and 11-0 over Eastland.
In the win over Eastland, Chyanne Ellett pitched a perfect game in the time-limit contest, striking out nine in 4.1 innings of work.
Offensively, the Lady Lions recorded nine hits and drew four walks en route to scoring six runs in the top of third inning and five more in the fourth.
Annie Gillispie and Yisel Mendoza finished with two hits and two RBIs apiece, while Ashlynn Patteson and Ayanna Clemons each recorded one hit and two RBIs. Ellett added a hit and an RBI, while Landry Holden drove in a run as well.
In the six-run third inning, Mendoza led off with a walk, Mya McDowell added a one-out free pass, then Gillispie doubled both home for a 2-0 lead. Aubrie Harris then singled ahead of an RBI base hit to center by Ellett that knocked in Gillispie. Patteson followed with an RBI single to left field that plated Harris with the fourth run. After Holden was hit by a pitch, Clemons doubled to right field, driving in Patteson and Lexie Castillo, running for Ellett.
During the five-run fourth, Gillispie and Harris singled and Ellett walked to load the bases with no outs. Patteson then walked to drive in a run and Holden was plunked by a pitch to plate the second run of the frame. Castillo, again running for Ellett, later scored on a wild pitch, while Mendoza capped the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle that brought home Patteson and Holden.
Brownwood's 14-0 triumph over Merkel featured another no-hitter as Ellett and Auzzlyn Benedict combined to work four innings. Ellett walked two and fanned five in three innings, while Benedict tossed a perfect fourth, retiring the side in order on 10 pitches.
Offensively, the Lady Lions finished with 15 hits, a pair of walks and capitalized on three Merkel errors. Brownwood recorded a three-run top of the first, four-run second and seven-run fourth inning.
Holden finished with three hits and four RBIs, while Patteson tallied three hits and three RBIs. Gillispie contributed three hits and a pair of RBIs, Ellett chipped in two hits and an RBI and Harris, Clemons and Mendoza notched one hit and one RBI.
In the first inning, Gillispie led off with a single, then Ellett reached on a one-out error ahead of an RBI single to center by Patteson. Holden then doubled down the right field line to bring home Patteson and Castillo, running for Ellett.
McDowell's one-out walk in the second was followed by a two-out RBI single to center field by Harris for the fourth run. Ellett then reached on an error to extend the inning, then Patteson doubled home Harris and Castillo. Holden then delivered an RBI single to right field to plate Patteson for a 7-0 advantage.
The Lady Lions doubled their run total in the fourth as Ellett, Patteson and Holden singled in succession to start the inning and produce the eighth run. Clemons then singled home Patteson and Mendoza's RBI double to right field brought in Holden, making the score 10-0. Clemons later scored on a wild pitch during the at-bat of Karly Harper, who walked. Gillispie then came through with a two-RBI double to drive in Mendoza and Harper. With two outs, Ellett's RBI single to left field brought home Gillispie to cap the scoring.
