Compiling 54 runs over their first five games of the season, the Brownwood Lady Lions’ bats were shut down in Tuesday’s home-opening 8-3 loss to the Class 3A Clyde Lady Bulldogs.
Brownwood (5-1), ranked No. 5 in Class 4A softball by the Texas Girls Coaches Association, mustered just two runs in the bottom of the third inning and one more in the seventh, and fell victim to a five-run outburst by Clyde in the top of the sixth inning.
Knotted at 2 in the sixth, Clyde’s Carissa Gordon singled to right field with one out, then Brooke Widener followed with a double to center field. With runners on second and third and one out, Sydnee Leverich grounded into a fielder’s choice that scored Londen Brashear, running for Gordon, with the go-ahead run
Karena McCoy’s RBI ground out drove home Widener with the fourth run, then Jacie Roberts bunted and a throwing error on the play scored two more runs, extending the Lady Bulldogs’ advantage to 6-3. Peyton Lee then singled up the middle to score Roberts.
Clyde tacked on its eighth run in the top of the seventh when Carissa McMillian’s two-out RBI single plated Gordon, who walked to start the frame.
Chyanne Ellett took the loss in the circle for the Lady Lions, allowing eight runs — five earned — on nine hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
Clyde pitcher Haven Williams yielded three runs — one earned — on seven hits with eight strikeouts and five walks as well en route to the victory.
The Lady Lions struck for a pair of runs off Williams in the bottom of the third.
Karly Harper drew a walk to start the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch during Mya McDowell’s at-bat. With one out, Annie Gillispie slapped an RBI single into center field to plate Harper. Aubrie Harris reached on an error, which moved Gillispie to second and allowed her to score on Ashlynn Patteson’s two-out RBI single to center field.
Clyde answered with its first run in the top of the fourth as Kaitlyn Turner connected on a solo home run off Ellett, who wasn’t able to recapture the mastery she displayed prior to the long ball.
The Lady Bulldogs drew even at 2 in the fourth when Lee drew a bases-loaded walk that scored McCoy, who reached on a single to left field.
Brownwood’s final run in the bottom of the seventh was the result of a Landry Holden sacrifice fly that scored Auzzlyn Benedict, running for Ellett who reached on an infield single.
The Lady Lions will be back in action Tuesday when they host Anson at 4:30 p.m. Brownwood knocked off Anson, 13-7, at the Eastland tournament earlier this month.
