The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets improved to 13-6 on the season and 8-2 at home after sweeping a doubleheader from Central Christian College, 4-0 and 5-1, Tuesday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
In the opening shutout victory for the Yellow Jackets, five pitchers combined on a six-hitter, with John Killough picking up the win in relief.
Chandler Clark started and worked three innings, allowing four hits with three strikeouts. Killough pitched the fifth, where he surrendered one hit.
Jacob Ford, Wesley Smith and Brendan Clanton tossed an inning each, yielding a total of one hit with two strikeouts and a pair of walks between them.
At the plate, Howard Payne struck for three runs in the bottom of the first and one more in the fifth.
Jacob Salazar doubled home Noah Payne and J.W. Ledbetter’s two-RBI singled plated Salazar and Blake Laney in the first.
In the fourth, Benjamin Lewis drove home Payne with a base hit to left.
HPU finished with five hits.
In the 5-1 nightcap victory, the Yellow Jackets again scored three runs in the first inning and added singles in the third an d fourth frames.
Jacob Rodriguez drove home Salazar, Hunter Bazan and David Groves with a three-RBI triple in the first. Then in the third, Rodriguez plated Lewis with a base hit.
Lewis added an RBI single that brought home Groves in the fourth, one of seven HPU hits.
Kory Owen tallied the win on the mound, pitching one inning of relief with three strikeouts and a walk.
Graham White started and lasted three innings, giving up three hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
