The third-ranked UT-Tyler Lady Patriots completed an American Southwest Conference softball sweep of Howard Payne, outscoring the Lady Jackets 45-0 in three games Thursday and Friday.

After suffering a 20-0 loss in Thursday's series opener, the Lady Jackets fell 12-0 and 13-0 in Friday doubleheader action.

In Friday's first game, Howard Payne (7-19-2, 4-14) surrendered three runs in the first inning, two in the third, six in the fourth and one run in the fifth.

Kendra Evans went the distance in the circle for the Lady Jackets, yielding 12 runs — six earned — on 16 hits with three strikeouts and two hit batters. Victoria Gonzales and Hannah Moore homered for UT-Tyler, and Moore finished with three RBIs while Andrea Gonzales collected four hits.

UT-Tyler (23-1, 14-1) pitcher Colleen Bentke hurled a one-hitter with one strikeout and one walk. Tonya Thompson singled for Howard Payne to start the bottom of the fourth.

In the 13-0 nightcap, UT-Tyler chalked up three runs in the first, five in the second, three in the third and one each in the fourth and fifth innings.

Howard Payne was again limited to just one hit – a two-out single by Haley Slater in the bottom of the second. Whitney Romero and Miranda Leal combined on the shutout for UT-Tyler with four strikeouts between them.

Evans, Tia Campos and Gabrielle Roque pitched for the Lady Jackets, surrendering a combined 13 runs — eight earned — on 18 hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Gonzales recorded a home run and three RBIs for UT-Tyler, while Ashley Perez finished with three hits and four RBIs.

Howard Payne returns to action Friday and Saturday with three games at first-year program McMurry (8-20, 4-14). Doubleheader action begins at 1 p.m. Friday with the finale slated for a noon start Saturday.
