LUBBOCK — Reigning Class 4A boys golf state champion Jaryn Pruitt is two strokes off the lead at the halfway point of the Region I-4A tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course, but ranks first among golfers on non potential state qualifying teams.
Pruitt, a junior at Brownwood High, fired an opening round of 71 Monday, tied for second place with Monahans' Bond Heflin, two shots back of Joe Kirk of Monahans (69). The rest of the top 10 includes J.T. Pittman of Monahans (73), Tucker Williams of Andrews (75), Phillip Hurtado of Abilene Wylie (75), Will Welch of Midlothian Heritage (75), Nick Viola of Abilene Wylie (76), Jake Leatherwood of Snyder (76) and Dawson Sanders of Midlothian Heritage (77).
The top three teams and top three individuals not on those teams will advance to Class 4A state tournament at Apple Rock Golf Course at Horseshoe Bay May 14-15. Monahans (290), Andrews (314) and Wylie (316) lead the charge, with Midlothian Heritage (325) in fourth place.
After Monday's opening round, Pruitt owns a four-stroke advantage over the nearest challenger on a team outside of top three - Midlothian Heritage's Welch (75) - and a five-shot cushion over the third and final potential individual qualifier - Snyder's Leatherwood (76).
Pruitt will tee off at 8:10 a.m. Tuesday according to Texas Tech's UIL website.
