The Howard Payne Lady Jackets concluded the 2018 softball season by winning one of three games against the Sul Ross Lady Lobos in American Southwest Conference action.

The Lady Jackets notched a 5-4 win in Game 2 of a Thursday doubleheader, while Sul Ross won the opening game, 12-1, and Friday's closing game, 9-2, of the series.

For the year, Howard Payne finished with a 9-29-2 overall record and 6-24 against ASC foes.

In HPU's victory over Sul Ross (18-20, 15-15), the Lady Jackets scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 4-2 deficit.

Ferrah Ford led off the fifth with a single to right field, then Tonya Thompson followed with a one-out bunt single. A walk by Morgean Schultz loaded the bases for HPU, ahead of an RBI bases-loaded walk by Kayla Boucher that closed the gap to 4-3. Haley Slater followed with a two-RBI double to right field that pushed the Lady Jackets in front.

HPU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Shawneece Jones led off with a bunt single and scored on Boucher's two-out RBI single to right field.

The Lady Jackets then drew even at 2 in the bottom of the second as Gabrielle Roque doubled with two outs, then Ford doubled to left field to plate Roque.

Howard Payne finished with eight hits — two by Ford and one each by Jones, Thompson, Boucher, Slater, Roque and Bri Davis.

Audrey Simpson went the distance in the circle for Howard Payne, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits with one walk to notch the victory.

In the 12-1 series opening loss, Sul Ross scored four runs in the top of the first inning and never looked back. The Lady Lobos led 5-1 after two innings, 8-1 after three, 11-1 after four and scored their final run in the fifth.

The Lady Jackets mustered their lone run in the bottom of the second as Boucher led off with a double, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on Roque's two-out RBI single to left field.

Howard Payne tallied just five hits — two from Boucher and one each from Roque, Davis and Alizabeth Moreno.

Tia Campos and Simpson pitched for the Lady Jackets, yielding 18 hits and 11 earned runs with two strikeouts and one walk between them.

In the 9-2 season finale defeat, the Lady Jackets spotted Sul Ross eight runs before scratching across single runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

HPU's first run scored when Jones reached on a leadoff error, then came home on Slater's one-out RBI double to left-center field.

The Lady Jackets' final run of the season was the result of a Roque leadoff single up the middle, followed by Thompson's two-out RBI single down the left field line.

Simpson and Roque split time in the circle, surrendering a total of 13 hits and six earned runs with two strikeouts.
