Nine members of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets baseball team received postseason accolades from the American Southwest Conference.
Junior outfielder Cliff Lunceford was selected to the first team as he finished the regular season third in the American Southwest Conference in batting average at .437 and third in on-base percentage at .500. Lunceford had a team-high seven doubles, five triples and one home run on 59 hits (10th in ASC) with 25 RBIs. He was also 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts.
Eight Yellow Jackets received honorable mention, including Brownwood High graduate Seth Owen as a starting pitcher.
Owen, a junior, finished the season with a 6-2 overall record posting 42 strikeouts in 46.2 innings pitched. He had a season-high eight strikeouts versus McMurry. He held opposing batters to a .220 average at the plate.
Second baseman Jacob Rodriguez hit .284 at the plate with five doubles and a team-high six triples (second in the ASC). On 33 hits, he drove in 21 runs and was 6-for-7 in stolen base attempts.
Third baseman David Groves drove in 19 runs on 24 hits and had five doubles and one home run on the year. He walked a team-high 35 times (second in the ASC) this season and was 2-for-2 in stolen base attempts.
Outfielder Jay Holland scored 33 runs on 33 hits with six doubles, three triples and two home runs. He had a .515 slugging percentage and a .447 on base percentage. He also posted a .925 fielding percentage.
Outfielder Benjamin Lewis was second on the team in hits with 35. He had three doubles, one triple and one home run. With a .416 on base percentage, he started 28 of 35 games played in for the Jackets.
Utility player Noah Payne saw time in the infield and outfield for the Jackets, scoring 33 runs on 30 hits with four doubles, four triples and one home run. He was 9-for-12 on stolen base attempts.
Relief pitcher Brenden Clanton owned a team best 1.74 earned run average with a 2-0 overall record with two saves. In 31 innings, he had a season-high six strikeouts versus Sul Ross.
Relief pitcher Evan Rodriguez recorded three saves in 13.1 innings pitched, and had 10 strikeouts and a 1-3 record on the year.
The Yellow Jackets, under head coach Stephen Lynn, finished with a 21-19 overall record, 9-15 in ASC action and finished 10th in the final league standings.
